Webmaster's Corner

This web site was developed to:

  • Provide information to the public about the Frankfort Car Club
  • Allow members to share information and pictures
  • Become a resource for all those interested in cars

To accomplish these goals we need member participation. To help you get the most from YOUR web site, I thought it might be helpful if I provided some tips on navigating the site and how you can participate and get the most from it.

Navigation

Our menu has more than meets the eye. Some choices are simple "click and go", while others have additional choices as your mouse hovers over them. If an item has additional choices you?ll see them drop down below the main category. Simply click on them and you'll get the new selection.

While in most cases you'll simply be brought to the new page, in the "Photos" section it will open a new window. When you're finished viewing the pictures, simply close the window.

Photos

There are currently three photo galleries. The first two are simply for viewing, and the third is where you can post your pictures (remember that "participation" thing we talked about?).

For the first two, once you've entered that area you can simply click on the arrow beneath the picture to see a slide show. Of course, you can always drag the slider bar to find the picture you're looking for and click it.

Gallery (Photos / Members Gallery)

Here's where you'll be able to show all those fantastic pictures of your car. Don't be intimidated by the process. It's not difficult, but simply a matter of going through the steps.

The first thing you'll need to do is register (we're keeping the spammers out). After you complete registration I'll get an email and approve it. After you're approved, go back to the Gallery and "login". You'll find that an album has been created for you and can begin uploading your pictures.

Simply click on "Add a Photo". Take a minute and review this screen. The simple way is to use the opening choice and begin uploading pictures. For the more advanced users, you'll see options on the left to add sub albums and several other things.

One item that I like is, towards the right there's a tab for "Windows XP". Following the instructions there will make uploading an entire folder of pictures very easy. One tip here - Once you've completed the instructions and open Windows Explorer, make sure you're NOT using the "Folder" option. If you are, click on the "Folders" icon at the top of Explorer to toggle it off. You'll then see the new menu on the left that says "Publish this folder to the web". Follow the prompts - piece of cake!

OK, one more tip. Keep the file sizes reasonable. Web resolution is only 72 DPI as opposed to print resolution that starts at 240 DPI and goes up. There's no reason to post 5 megapixel pictures, and if you try, it won't work. To give you an idea of correct size, the original pictures I took at Art Bulman's garage are 10,000 kb. The files used in the gallery are 860 kb. This is the internet, not the bedroom - keep it small.

If you need a FREE program to resize photographs, take a look at IrFanView (http://irfanview.com/).

Narratives

How's that for a title? I considered "Tales of Old", "Liars Corner", "Bench Racers" and a few others that I can't put here. The bottom line is, this is where you can share a story or two. Tell us about your first car, how you got the car you love, first outing, ticket received/ avoided - you name it! After all, this is for fun.

Just send me the story in a simple format (Word doc, or txt file preferred), give it a title and if possible, include a few pictures. I'll take care of the rest.

Conclusion

If we all contribute a little, we'll have a great site. If you're having a problem, call me or drop an e-mail. Also, if you have an idea or see something I did wrong or could do better, let me know.
